Stow's History Projects
The manuscript images below show Stow at work as an historian. The first three images are from London Metropolitan Archives, Guildhall MS 3313. On fol. xj recto Stow notes the building of a prison for "night walkers" in 1286. On fol. xxx recto he remarks that Phillippa, Queen of England, is buried at Westminster. On fol. cxliiij verso he comments on the death of a wealthy clerk named John Franke; this folio also contains the confusing account of one John Gardener and his refusal of the Host during the mass.
The second manuscript is Cambridge, Trinity College, MS R.3.20. Here, on page 361, Stow describes the burial place of John Shirley.
