Marks of Ownership

In some of his medieval manuscripts, Stow made his ownership explicit. There are four manuscripts in this part of our exhibit.

While Bodleian Library, MS Laud Misc. 557, fol. i merely notes that it is John Stow's book, Glasgow University Library, MS Hunterian 379 (V.1.16), fol. 3r states when Stow acquired that book. Trinity College, Cambridge, MS R.3.21, fol. 320v contains a note that John Stow owns this book “and many mo.” Lambeth Palace, MS 598, fol. 137v contains not only Stow's ownership mark, but John Dee's as well.
